Today, the City of Saint Paul is taking a major step toward correcting historic wrongs by joining the Just Deeds coalition to help home and property owners discharge discriminatory racial covenants on their property deeds.
“Racial covenants are a dark chapter in our city's history, and we’re committed to correcting this injustice in our community,” said Mayor Carter. “Racism has no home in Saint Paul. By joining the Just Deeds coalition, we move forward our work to create a more just and equitable city for all residents.” Just Deeds is a collaborative effort between community groups, attorneys, and government agencies to identify and remove racial covenants on property deeds in Minnesota. The City is also working with the Center for the Study of Black Life and the Law at Mitchell Hamline School of Law to identify volunteer attorneys - including law students - and legal professionals to assist with the effort. Residents are encouraged to visit stpaul.gov/racial-covenants to learn more about the process of discharging covenants. We are looking forward to this year's Citywide Spring Clean Up! Telling the past and present of the Dakota people through mapsMinneapolis (Village of Many Lakes) & St Paul (Village along the White Cliffs) By Marlena Myles From MPR:
This week marks a painful event in U.S. and Dakota history: 160 years ago, on March 3, the U.S. Congress passed the Dakota Removal Act. It led to the exile and killing of many Dakota people who were the original people of this land. February 27, 2023 6-7:30 PM House of Hope, 797 Summit Ave This event will be co-hosted by The Summit Hill Association and The Summit-University Planning Council. These two district councils both border Summit Avenue. You can find more information from the City of Saint Paul regarding this project at: https://www.stpaul.gov/.../summit-avenue-regional-trail This community meeting is intended to be educational. We will have representatives from the City of Saint Paul briefly present an overview of the Summit Ave Regional Trail Plan. Then we will facilitate a question-and-answer portion of the meeting. Representatives from District Councils will ask questions from those that are pre-submitted. You may submit questions via email to questions@summit-university.org. Due to the number of attendees expected, there will not be an opportunity for individual questions. We will do our best to get as many questions asked as possible and submit the complete list of questions to the City following the meeting. We will also provide a feedback form that you can fill out and return. Our goal is to ensure that the community has the information they need about the plan, and clarity before submitting public comments to the City of Saint Paul. We will distribute information about how you can submit public comments to the City and provide any known deadlines and meeting dates that have been set. We are not holding this meeting to reach a consensus in opinion about the plan during the meeting. No decisions will be made at this meeting by either District Council. We ask that attendees respect each other's opinions, and not shout during the meeting. Those that do so will be warned and then asked to leave immediately if it happens a second time. Thank you!
