Due to the recent snowfall and unseasonably cooler weather, the Citywide Spring Cleanup will not be held on April 21, 2018. As an alternative, the City of Saint Paul is  asking the public to stop by a designated recreation or community center from April 25 - 27 to pick up supplies to help clean up the city anytime between April 28 - May 5.

NEW 2018 Citywide Spring Cleanup details:
  • Supply pick up between April 25 - 27 while supplies last.  A limited quantity of thank-you gifts will be available at pick-up sites.
  • Cleanup your parks and neighborhoods anytime between April 28 - May 5.
  • We ask you to either leave your bag by a park trash can or dispose of them yourselves. Please do not leave items along the streets as they will not get picked up in a timely manner.
April 25-27 supply pick-up locations:
  • Ward 1: Jimmy Lee/Oxford Community Center (270 N Lexington)
  • Ward 2: El Rio Vista Recreation Center (179 E Robie St)
  • Ward 3: Highland Park Community Center (1987 Ford Pkwy)
  • Ward 4: Hancock Recreation Center (1610 Hubbard Ave)
  • Ward 5: North Dale Recreation Center (1414 N St. Albans)
  • Ward 6: Phalen Recreation Center (1000 E Wheelock)
  • Ward 7: Dayton’s Bluff Recreation Center (800 Conway St)
Please note that you must pick up supplies during rec center open hours. We thank you for being patient with us in making this decision and we hope to see you out in the parks soon!

Racial Justice Movie Night

QUEST: A Portrait of an American Family
Friday, March 9, 7:00 p.m., Unity Church-Unitarian (733 Portland Avenue, St. Paul, www.unityunitarian.org)

Join Unity Church members and friends for an ongoing film series to further our growth in the understanding and challenging of white supremacy and structural racism. Popcorn will be served and there will be time for conversation after the film.

The New York Times review begins: "Barack Obama is not the subject of Quest, Jonathan Olshefski’s new documentary, an intimate and patient portrait of a North Philadelphia family. But the film, which begins and ends with presidential elections — Mr. Obama’s in 2008 and his successor’s eight years later — is shadowed, in some ways haunted, by his presence and his temperament. At one point, he appears on television, in the wake of the massacre of school children and their teachers in Newtown, Connecticut. 'These neighborhoods are our neighborhoods,' he says, referring to the places that have been devastated by gun violence. 'These children are our children.'”

Book Fair at Obama Elementary School
Purchasing books for your own children and friends is an easy way to support the scholars at Obama Elementary school. Obama’s Scholastic Book Fair will be open on Thursday, March 15, between 6:00-7:15 p.m., and located just inside the front door on Holly Avenue. A percentage of book sales is returned to the school library.

USED BOOK SALE: Unity Church-Unitarian (733 Portland Avenue, St. Paul,  www.unityunitarian.org )

All proceeds benefit Unity’s youth ministries.
Saturday, March 24:  8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Sunday, March 25: 9:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
$5 Fill-A-Bag on Sunday from 2:00-3:30 p.m.

Better Angels: Bridging the Red/Blue Divide in Communities
Wednesday, March 28, 7:15 p.m., Unity Church-Unitarian (733 Portland Avenue, St. Paul, www.unityunitarian.org)
We may live in the most divisive time since the 1850s. In this session you will see how people with very different political viewpoints can come to understand one another beyond stereotypes and find common ground. You will learn a couple of specific skills for talking with loved ones on the other political side. And, you will have a chance to link up with the Better Angels local and national effort to show how we can have sharp political differences without denigrating and demonizing one another. Bill Doherty is a Unity Church member, University of Minnesota Professor, and co-founder of Better Angels, a nonprofit aiming to depolarize America.

Higher Ground Academy: FOLLOWING NEIGHBORHOOD ISSUES

3/19/2018

Picture
Higher Ground Academy is a K-12 charter school located at 1381 Marshall Avenue in Saint Paul. The current location serves approximately 600 students, mainly of East African descent. The Higher Ground Academy is exploring relocating the middle and high school programs to a new location at 317 Marshall Avenue, at the CLC building site currently occupied by Saint Paul College.

Project Scope
Approximately 10,000 square feet of an existing one-story building on the site will be remodeled, and 35,000 square feet of new construction will be added to the site to accommodate 450 students in the 7-12 charter school program.
The design for the new building will use materials and colors that complement the neighborhood and Saint Paul College. Construction is to start in the fall of 2018 and be completed for occupancy in the fall of 2019. Higher Ground Academy and Saint Paul College hope to create a collaborative partnership in developing a new building and curriculum at this site, that will flexibly work for both institutions.

Zoning Variances

The school will be applying to the City of St. Paul for a few zoning variances for the project. The required zoning variances are:

• The proposed building footprint will cover more than the 30% of the site.
• The rear yard setback next to the parking area will be less than the required 25’.
• Parking will be accommodated through a shared parking agreement with St. Paul College.

They will be holding a community forum to discuss their project, and they will be also meeting with our Neighborhood Development Committee. At this time, we are unsure when their hearings will be scheduled, but we intend to update this as soon as those dates are set.

393 MARSHALL AVE: FOLLOWING NEIGHBORHOOD ISSUES (Part 2)

393 Marshall is where the Boy Scouts headquarters currently is, on the corner of Marshall and Western. The applicant (Exeter Group) is interested in demolishing the current structure and building housing on the lot.

Their first step was applying for a rezoning of the property from OS (Office Service) to T2 Residential. It has been granted, and they are able to move ahead with their project. You can read more about this step in their process:

http://www.summit-university.org/the-porchlite-blog/393-marshall-ave-following-neighborhood-matters

We will be sharing more details as they come to us. At this point, they do not anticipate that they will need to apply for any variances.

SUPC Cooks: Charred Cauliflower with Cumin, Paprika and Feta

By Garry Nordenstam
This is my take on Sameh Wadi's recipe from his stellar restaurant, Saffron, which unfortunately is now closed. However, his cookbook "The New Mediterranean Table: Modern and Rustic Recipes Inspired by Traditions Spanning Three Continents" is available.

In my version, the char on the cauliflower is achieved by roasting it in the oven. Then, you can quickly pull the dish together for serving after everything else you are cooking is ready.

Ingredients
Canola Oil
1 head of cauliflower, sliced horizontally and cored
Sea salt
1 tbsp cumin seeds, toasted and ground
Pinch of Aleppo pepper flakes
2 garlic cloves, finely grated or minced
tbsp fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup crumbled sheep's milk feta (or cow or goat)
2 tbsp flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped
Spanish sweet, smoked paprika, for garnish
Extra virgin olive oil, for garnish

Directions
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.

Roast the Cauliflower... Toss the cauliflower with canola oil, place it on a rimmed sheet pan and roast it for 10-15 minutes until it achieves a nice char. Remove from the oven and hold until ready to finish the dish.

Pull it all Together... Heat a saute pan over moderate heat and add a little olive oil. Use a heavy-bottomed pan for best results. When the cauliflower starts cooking and is heated through; add the sea salt, Aleppo pepper flakes and lemon juice. Cook for about 30 seconds, stirring the whole time.

Plate the Dish... Place the cauliflower in a serving dish. Garnish with the feta, paprika and parsley. You can also drizzle olive oil over it for even more flavor.
