News from the Summit University Neighborhood

393 Marshall Ave: Following Neighborhood Issues

12/27/2017

Picture
393 Marshall is where the Boy Scouts headquarters currently is, on the corner of Marshall and Western. The applicant (Exeter Group) is interested in purchasing the property, demolishing the current structure, and building housing on the lot.

At this time, they have only applied to rezone the lot at 393 Marshall from OS (office) to T2 (residential). If the property is rezoned, they will begin to develop their site plans. You can find more information about the city's zoning code here:
https://www.stpaul.gov/departments/safety-inspections/general-intent-zoning-code

Their application was filed in early November, and notice was sent to neighbors close to the property. They met with SUPC at our November 14 Neighborhood Development Committee meeting, and SUPC officially voted to oppose the application. The basis for this decision was that we felt there was not enough contact or conversation with neighbors leading up to this major change, and opposed moving forward without community discussion. SUPC sent a formal letter to the City explaining this decision and concern.

Their Saint Paul Zoning Committee hearing was on November 21, where they voted to support the rezoning application. Their next steps will be:

February 7
Saint Paul City Council public hearing- 3 pm at Saint Paul City Hall, 15 Kellogg Blvd. W.

February 8
SUPC Community Forum night, 6:30 pm at 627 Selby Ave (call 651-228-1855 for info)

If you have any comments or concerns you are able to participate by writing our Ward 1 City Council Office:

ward1@ci.stpaul.mn.us
or
310-A City Hall 15 Kellogg Blvd. West
Saint Paul, MN 55102

Or you can write to us and we will forward your letter!

Name:
Micheal Foley

Family/pets:
I have a partner named Jen and two cats (Sienna and Zoey).

How long have you lived in the neighborhood:
I moved to the neighborhood in July 2016.

What do you call your "hometown":
I grew up just across the Wisconsin border in a small town called New Richmond.

Occupation/volunteer work:
I work as a web developer of the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Favorite thing about Summit-University:
I love the vitality of the community, especially the Selby business district. I spend a lot of time walking and biking through the neighborhood and enjoying the big, shady trees and friendly people.

What you hope to bring to SUPC:
I aim to bring a fresh perspective to the board. I hope to represent the interests of renters and low-income families. I want the board to think not only about how our decisions affect all our neighbors, but also people who may move here in the future.

Mike is a SUPC Board Member who represents Sub-District F.

How to help Summit-University when shopping online

12/19/2017

Though we prefer you shop local at one of our excellent neighborhood shops, we know that sometimes you need something they just don't have. Luckily, there's still a way to benefit our neighborhood even if you shop online.

AmazonSmile is a website operated by Amazon with the same products, prices, and shopping features as Amazon.com. The difference is that when you shop on AmazonSmile, the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible products to the charitable organization of your choice.

Get set up!

Here's how you can have a portion of your Amazon Smile purchases donated to the Summit-University Planning Council:

1. Sign in to Smile.Amazon.com on your desktop or mobile phone browser.
Picture
2. Under "Select a charity" use the search bar to type in " Summit-University Planning Council ."

3. Select "Summit-University Planning Council" from the list of charities.

4. Check the box that says "Yes, I understand that I must always start at smile.amazon.com to support Summit-University Planning Council." Then click the "Start Shopping" button.

Bonus:

Whenever you log on to make an Amazon purchase, make sure to start from smile.amazon.com. You may even want to bookmark that page. Savvy users may also want to check out the SmileAlways extension for Chrome web browsers. SmileAlways automatically redirects all Amazon.com pages to Smile.Amazon.com.

I have lived in the Summit-University neighborhood for about four and half years. After renting here for a year, my partner and I decided to buy a house in the Rondo neighborhood and make this our permanent home. I love the beauty and diversity of this community and I enjoy staying involved through the Summit-University Planning Council.

I am passionate about the environment and work in Public Services for Saint Paul Parks and Recreation. In my spare time, I enjoy camping, cooking, traveling, and helping to beautify the neighborhood through my ever-evolving gardens.

Liz is a SUPC Board Member who represents Sub-District C.

SPPD Cardboard Recycling

By Patty Lammers

Reduce the chances of home burglaries by recycling new electronics and large item boxes.

Each year, shortly before and after the holidays we see burglary reports where new items have been stolen. How did the burlars know about the new items? They will often see the boxes out for recycling.

We want to help reduce your chances of becoming a victim by partnering with the City of Saint Paul's All in Recycling Program. The program is free to all residents. Please keep in mind the following:

Only cardboard will be accepted
Please flatten all boxes
Officers will be monitoring the container to ensure only cardboard is left

January 8th, 2018 at 4:30pm
389 Hamline Ave S

If you have any questions or need more information contact Patty Lammers, 651-266-5455 or patricia.lammers@ci.stpaul.mn.us
