This is the first in a series of educational events organized by the League of Women Voters St. Paul (LWVSP) designed to inform the local voting public on issues relevant to our city and its residents. "Bail Me Out: Bail Reform in Minnesota" will explore the structure of the bail system and the problem of excessive bail and its impact on the community, especially vulnerable communities. Featured speakers include Judge N Nicole Starr, 2nd Judicial District, Ramsey County, and Tonja Honsey, Executive Director, Minnesota Freedom Fund. The Minnesota Freedom Fund is a nonprofit organization that pays criminal bail and immigration bons for those who cannot afford it. The organization stands against cash bail as unjust and they identify wealth-based discrimination as a vehicle by which the criminal justice system targets populations for structural violence.

The League of Women Voters of St. Paul (www.lwvsp.org), celebrating its 100th year in 2019, is dedicated to informed and active participation of citizens in government. It is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization and neither supports nor opposes political parties or candidates. Future LWVSP talks will include topics such as election security, affordable housing, the National Popular Vote, and presidential primaries vs. caucuses in Minnesota. Please see the LWVSP event calendar for more information. This event will include Q and A, and there will be light refreshments.
