The Sterling Club, incorporated on August 28, 1919, is one of the few remaining icons for the historic Rondo neighborhood in St. Paul, MN. If was founded during a time when African-Americans could not access the same accommodations as white community members. Original membership was a vast representation of professionals, including lawyers, government employees, war veterans, railroad workers, janitors, and postal workers; and all carried a vision of community-building.

On, Wednesday, August 28, 2019, Commissioner Carter honored The Sterling Club with a proclamation on it’s official 100th anniversary.

The centennial celebration will culminate with a formal event on Saturday, September 14 at 6 p.m. where they will honor Richard Mann with the Lifetime of Service Award, and Mary Mackbee with the Outstanding Citizen Award.

Hosted by Heritage Tea House

On Saturday, September 21st we are celebrating us and demanding that love replaces guns on our community.

Guns Down Love Up Unity Festival is a day to celebrate and uplift those we have lost to gun violence. This year's festival theme, "My Brother's Keeper" will highlight alternative solutions to decreasing gun violence through healing, laughter, and reconciliation.

The day will be filled with fun activities for the whole family;
- Educational gun violence outreach
- Healing spaces
- Creative spaces
- Cultural space
- Free Food

Statistically
-African Americans are ten times more likely than white Americans to die by gun violence.
-68% of African American adults or someone they care for has experienced gun violence in their lifetime.
- Children exposed to violence are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol; suffer from depression, anxiety, and post traumatic stress disorder; resort to aggressive and violent behavior, and engage in criminal activity.

While the numbers may be shocking, the results aren't. Communities across America are discussing the trauma of gun violence and how to solve it. Guns Down. Love Up is bringing this conversation to the community residents of North Minneapolis. And We invite your organization to join us in supporting this vital mission as we focus on the impact of gun violence in our community.

This is the first in a series of educational events organized by the League of Women Voters St. Paul (LWVSP) designed to inform the local voting public on issues relevant to our city and its residents. "Bail Me Out: Bail Reform in Minnesota" will explore the structure of the bail system and the problem of excessive bail and its impact on the community, especially vulnerable communities. Featured speakers include Judge N Nicole Starr, 2nd Judicial District, Ramsey County, and Tonja Honsey, Executive Director, Minnesota Freedom Fund. The Minnesota Freedom Fund is a nonprofit organization that pays criminal bail and immigration bons for those who cannot afford it. The organization stands against cash bail as unjust and they identify wealth-based discrimination as a vehicle by which the criminal justice system targets populations for structural violence.

The League of Women Voters of St. Paul (www.lwvsp.org), celebrating its 100th year in 2019, is dedicated to informed and active participation of citizens in government. It is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization and neither supports nor opposes political parties or candidates. Future LWVSP talks will include topics such as election security, affordable housing, the National Popular Vote, and presidential primaries vs. caucuses in Minnesota. Please see the LWVSP event calendar for more information. This event will include Q and A, and there will be light refreshments.

Planting at Lilydale Bluffs

Sat, October 05
8:30 am - 12:30 pm
Lilydale Regional Park - St Paul

Volunteers Needed: 100
Supervisors Needed: 10-15

This 100-person volunteer event is sponsored by our generous partner, the Saint Paul Area Association of REALTORS® Charitable Foundation. Volunteers will plant native seeds and plugs along a two-acre swath of land at Lilydale Bluffs in St. Paul. Significant erosion in the area has led to degrading bluffs and poor water quality in the nearby Mississippi River. The native plants will encourage habitat recovery and stabilize the bluff soils, a critical piece to improving the bluffs.

If you’d like to register as a group (Scout Troop, employees of a company, school group, gardening clubs, etc), please contact Genna at volunteer@greatrivergreening.org.

Partners and Funders: Saint Paul Area Association of REALTORS®  Foundation, the Outdoor Heritage Fund & the City of Saint Paul.
