It is time for our annual election to select our Board of Directors! If you are a resident of District 8 and are 16 or older, please cast your vote by September 30! You can do this on our website at summit-university.org.
We are a community-based organization, and our Board of Directors consists of individuals from the neighborhood, just like you. We are a team of teachers, gardeners, parents, artists, coaches, bakers, renters, cyclists, students, elders, musicians, dreamers, organizers, and, most importantly, neighbors! Our Board of Directors is a team that works together to keep the community informed and engaged about neighborhood issues, and we need a big team to accomplish that work.
What is a District Council?
District councils are independent neighborhood organizations that represent the 17 planning districts of Saint Paul. They collaborate with residents, businesses, community partners, and city leaders to share information, address local priorities, and foster engagement throughout the city. District councils provide numerous opportunities for residents to get involved and make a difference, ranging from community events to neighborhood improvements.
Are District Council board members elected officials?
No, District Council board members are volunteers who serve on a nonprofit board of directors. While many nonprofits hold elections to select their board members, being elected to the board does not equate to serving in a public office.
Who can join the Summit-University Planning Council board of directors?
Any resident of the Summit-University district who is 16 years old or older can join. Additionally, there are a few spaces available for organizations working in the community to send a representative.
We currently have space for a few write-ins, if you would like to join! Write yourself in when you vote, and then contact us for candidate materials to help you tell your neighbors how to write you in!
What kind of work does a Summit-University Planning Council board member do?
Board members engage in standard nonprofit governance activities, such as approving budgets, setting strategic visions, and overseeing the organization. This work is completed through regular meetings and consensus-building votes. Board members work to help fulfill the mission of engaging community members in issues affecting the neighborhood, which may involve talking to neighbors, distributing flyers, or participating in community events. Each board member serves on at least one committee that focuses on specific community issues, such as safety, development, businesses, or communication and connection. This is about a monthly 3-hour time commitment.
Who does the Summit-University Planning Council need on the board?
We welcome all kinds of people! You don’t need to be a leader or a public speaker to join. The community can benefit from a wide array of talents and passions. The most important quality we seek in a board member is a respect for and commitment to collaborative work with a diverse group of people.
